Fiscal Responsibility
As a member of the SeaTac City Council—and for the past year as Mayor—Mohamed Egal has prioritized the responsible stewardship of public funds. Under his leadership, there have been zero new property or utility taxes. Mayor Egal firmly believes that “government must be the best steward of public funds and live within its means.”
While some neighboring cities in King County have faced budget shortfalls and cuts to essential services, SeaTac has maintained a strong reserve fund of approximately $30 million. This financial stability ensures that the city can continue providing vital services even in the face of economic uncertainty.
housing and Economic development
Mayor Egal believes that housing is a human right. The greatest nation and state should ensure that every citizen has access to stable housing. Without a home, individuals cannot work, maintain a family life, or achieve personal and financial stability. He strongly advocates for government collaboration with the private sector and nonprofit organizations to build affordable housing in every community.
Under Mayor Egal’s leadership, SeaTac has approved over 1,400 transit-oriented affordable housing units in the past three years, providing much-needed housing options for residents.
His commitment to economic growth has led to strategic investments in childcare, making SeaTac the city with the highest number of childcare providers per capita in Washington State. These investments also support workforce development and small businesses, ensuring continued economic opportunities for the city’s diverse community.
PUBLIC SAFETY
Public safety remains a top priority for Mayor Egal. He has worked to expand policing services provided by the King County Sheriff’s Department, hire additional officers, and introduce new programs such as FDCARES through the Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority. This initiative connects residents in crisis with social services to address underlying challenges.
Believing in strong community engagement, Mayor Egal launched the Coffee with a Cop program, giving residents an opportunity to meet local officers in a friendly, informal setting. Additionally, SeaTac has achieved a 98% diversion rate in its youth court program, providing young people with positive alternatives to the criminal justice system. Outreach to immigrant communities has also doubled with the introduction of new police substations.
BUILDING new sidewalks
Sidewalks are essential for public safety and quality of life. Since 2021, SeaTac has built 60 miles of new sidewalks, ensuring safer routes for children walking to school and for seniors navigating their neighborhoods. Mayor Egal remains committed to expanding sidewalk infrastructure so that all residents can move safely and comfortably throughout the city.
north seatac park
For years, the future of North SeaTac Park was uncertain, with concerns over potential development by the Port of Seattle. Mayor Egal has worked alongside North SeaTac Park Defenders, Port Commissioners, State Senators Karen Keiser and Marko Liias, Congressman Adam Smith, and Senator Patty Murray to protect this invaluable public space.
Thanks to these collaborative efforts, the park’s future is now secure. Mayor Egal is proud to have played a role in preserving this natural gem and will continue working to maintain and enhance it for future generations.
